Today is "National Wear Red Day for Women" to raise awareness of cardiovascular disease.
Heart disease is the number one cause of death among women in the United States, said Dr. Christine Sellberg of Phoenix Heart.
"One in three women dies from cardiovascular disease, but a lot of women and their physicians aren't aware that women's risk is that high," said Sellberg.
The goal of wear red day is "to increase women's awareness of cardiolvascular disease and to encourage them to get their risks checked out," she said.
Sellberg urged women to take charge of their heart health. She said the best way to do that "is to identify what risk factors you have for cardiovascular disease, including any elevations of blood pressure, high cholesterol, high glucose, being overweight or being physically inactive."
The wear red day is sponsored by the American Heart Association.
I feel so stupid! I’ve worn red almost all week. The day I should be wearing red, I’m wearing blue! GRRR
If you knew you were going to have a stroke tomorrow, would you do something about it today? It’s called the Silent Killer because half of all victims of heart attack and stroke have no warning. But in as little as fifteen minutes you can determine if you are at risk for heart attack or stroke with SafeHeart Health Screens. So, I went today to have a Carotid Artery Ultrasound Screen, Carotid Intima Media Thickness (CIMT) Screen, Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Screen, Peripheral Vascular Disease Screen, and an Atrial Fibrillation Screen done Safe Heart Health Screens. I don’t know if they have this kind of testing in your area, but it is well worth the effort to find out. Or at least talk to your doctor about the screenings.

Such an important message- so many woman ignore the signs and Drs do not always take women serious when they have problems!

How scary is that!? I have this fear that I will die with no warning from something like that... not that I'd want to die slowly either... but I digress! Good for you! All women need to take initiative for their health.

Thank you for letting us know, Shelly. I never heard of such a day and think it's terrific.
So what color are you wearing today (just kidding).
